The aborigines came to Australia tens of thousands of years ago where they could do as they wish without intervention. In the mid to late 1700s the British came to Australia under Captain James Cook. When the British arrived, they claimed the land for England and began taking away the rights of the aborigines. This eventually led to the Referendum in 1967 where the aborigines were given their rights back. This was a critical point for the aborigines.
